Symbolism

Symbolism, a late 19th-century art movement of French and Belgian origin, flourished throughout Europe between 1886 and 1900. It was not so much a style of art. Symbolism had a significant influence on Expressionism and Surrealism, two movements that descended directly from Symbolism era. Their aim was to portray mysterious interpretations of emotions and ideas by using unobvious symbols or symbols that represent the artists message.
